It is bordered by the La Libertad, San Martín, Loreto and Ucayali departments in the north, Ucayali to the east, Pasco to the south and Lima and Ancash to the west. It is administered by a regional government. Its capital is the city of Huánuco.

Huánuco has a rugged topography, comprising parts of the Sierra and the High Jungle (mountain rim) regions. Being equidistant from the north and the south of the country, it has the privilege of having a mild weather with an average annual temperature of 20 °C (68 °F).

The region's main port is Salaverry, one of Peru's largest ports. The name of the region is Spanish for "freedom" or "liberty"; it was named in honor of the Intendancy of Trujillo's proclaiming independence from Spain in 1820. It is the ninth smallest department in Peru, but it is also its second-most populous after Piura and its second-most densely populated department after Lambayeque.

The Cordillera Oriental is a mountain range (cordillera) that forms the eastern branch of the Andes in Peru. It contains Paleozoic metamorphic rocks and runs through the entire country, from the Ecuadorian border in the north to the Bolivian border in the south. It has an approximate length of 1,800 km and is located along the edge of the Peruvian Amazon. The range crosses the departments of Amazonas, Loreto, San Martín, Huánuco, Ucayali, Pasco, Junín, Cusco, Madre de Dios, and Puno.

It includes many subsidiary ranges such as the Vilcanota, Vilcabamba, Urubamba and Carabaya mountain ranges and peaks above 6,000 m such as Salcantay.

Huánuco (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈwanuko]; Quechua: Wanuku) is a city in central Peru. It had a population of 196,627 as of 2017 and in 2015 it had a population of 175,068. It is the capital of the Huánuco Region and the Huánuco District. It is the seat of the diocese of Huánuco. The metropolitan city of Huanuco is 170,000 hab (2011, urban pop, INEI). It has three districts, Huanuco (head), Amarilis, and Pillco Marca. In this city, the Higueras river meets the Huallaga river, one of the largest rivers in the country.
