Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area (Vietnamese: Vùng đô thị Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh) is a metropolitan area that was proposed by the Ministry of Construction of Vietnam to the Government of Vietnam for approval in June 2008. According to this master plan, this metropolitan area will include provinces around Ho Chi Minh City in the Southeast region and 2 provinces in the Mekong Delta region.

This metropolitan area currently has an area of 30,404 square kilometres with radius of 150–200 km, a population of 20–22 million inhabitants, of which urban residents account for 16–17 million indicating an urbanisation rate of 77–80%. By 2050, the population will have increased to 25-27 million people, and the urbanized rate is estimated to rise to 90%. Constructed land will be 1800–2100 square kilometres by 2020. Ho Chi Minh City will be the core urban center of the area while other surrounding cities and towns will play their role as satellite municipalities. Baria-Vungtau will serve as the main deepwater seaport of the region, especially Sao Mai-Ben Dinh seaport, Thi Vai Port. Long Thanh International Airport and Tan Son Nhat International Airport will serve as the air traffic hub of the region. Hi-tech park will be located in Ho Chi Minh City while other heavy industry will concentrate in Đồng Nai, Bình Dương and Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu. Vũng Tàu is planned to serve as a tourism hub, with coastal beaches and several entertainment resort projects.

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC; Vietnamese: Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, IPA: [tʰan˨˩ fow˦˥ how˨˩ cɪj˦˥ mɨn˧˧]), known historically as Saigon (Vietnamese: Sài Gòn, IPA: [saːj˨˩ ɣɔŋ˨˩]), is the most populous city in Vietnam, with a population of 14,002,598 in 2025.

The city's geography is defined by rivers and canals, of which the largest is Saigon River. As the largest financial centre in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City has the largest gross regional domestic product out of all Vietnam provinces and municipalities, contributing around a quarter of the country's total GDP. Ho Chi Minh City's metropolitan area is ASEAN's 5th largest economy, also the biggest outside an ASEAN country capital.

Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area in the context of Tây Ninh

Tây Ninh (listen) is a formerly provincial city in Southeastern Vietnam. The new provincial capital is located in Long An Ward, Tây Ninh Province (formerly as Tân An City, Long An Province). Tây Ninh is one of nine provinces and cities in the Southern Key Economic Region (Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area). Tây Ninh is approximately 90 km (55 miles) northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, the largest city of Vietnam, and 182 km (113 miles) to Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia; all by National Route 22. As of 2019, the city had a population of 135,254 over the provincial population of 1,169,165 on a total area of 140 km (54 sq mi).

Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area in the context of Tan Son Nhat Airport

Tan Son Nhat International Airport (IATA: SGN, ICAO: VVTS) is an international airport serving Ho Chi Minh City, the most populous city in Vietnam. It is located in the former Tân Bình district within the Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area.

It is the busiest airport in Vietnam, with 32.5 million passengers in 2016, 38.5 million passengers in 2018, and about 41 million passengers in 2023. As of December 2023, it is the 50th-busiest airport in the world, and the fourth-busiest in Southeast Asia. As of April 2025, it has a total capacity of approximately 50 million passengers following the opening of Terminal 3. Previous capacity limits of approximately 30 million passengers had caused constant and increasing traffic and congestion, leading to the construction of another airport in Ho Chi Minh City as an alternative, scheduled to be completed by the first half of 2026.

Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area in the context of Bien Hoa

Biên Hòa (Northern accent: listen, Southern accent: listen) is a former city in Vietnam and was the capital city of Đồng Nai Province. Situated northeast of Ho Chi Minh City (also known as Saigon), Biên Hòa is connected to it via Hanoi Highway (part of National Route 1). As a class-1 provincial city, it is the sixth largest city in Vietnam by population.

Biên Hòa ceased to exist as a municipal city on 1 July 2025, following the elimination of district level units in Vietnam, and became a part of the Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area.
