It is the seat of one of the larger municipalities in the country with a population of 59,770, and the town also covers 1.341 square kilometres (331 acres). Gostivar has road and railway connections with the other cities in the region, such as Tetovo, Skopje, Kičevo, Ohrid, and Debar. A freeway was built in 1995, from Gostivar to Tetovo, 24 km (15 mi) long. Gostivar is the seat of Gostivar Municipality.

Mavrovo (Macedonian: Маврово, pronounced [ˈmavrɔvɔ] ; or Mavrovo Valley, Macedonian: Мавровска Котлина, romanizedMavrovska Kotlina), near Gostivar is a valley region in the northwest of North Macedonia. It is home to Mavrovo National Park and a winter sports center. Some of the villages and smaller hamlets include: Mavrovo, Nikiforovo, Leunovo, and Mavrovi Anovi. This micro region is named Mavrovo after the most populated settlement in the region, the village of Mavrovo.

Polog (Macedonian: Полог, romanizedPolog; Albanian: Pollog), also known as the Polog Valley (Macedonian: Полошка Котлина, romanized: Pološka Kotlina; Albanian: Lugina e Pollogut) is located in the north-western part of North Macedonia, near the border with Kosovo.

It is divided into Upper Polog (Macedonian: Горен Полог; Albanian: Pollogu i Epërm) and Lower Polog (Macedonian: Долен Полог; Albanian: Pollogu i Poshtëm). Tetovo and Gostivar are the largest populated towns in this valley and Albanians form an ethnic majority in the region.
