In Greek mythology, Geryon (/ˈɡɛriən/; Ancient Greek: Γηρυών, genitive Γηρυόνος), also Geryone (Ancient Greek: Γηρυόνης, romanized: Gēryónēs, or Γηρυονεύς, Gēryoneús), son of Chrysaor and Callirrhoe, the grandson of Medusa and the nephew of Pegasus, was a fearsome giant who dwelt on the island Erytheia of the mythic Hesperides in the far west of the Mediterranean. A more literal-minded later generation of Greeks associated the region with Tartessos in southern Iberia. Geryon was often described as a monster with either three bodies and three heads, or three heads and one body, or three bodies and one head. He is commonly accepted as being mostly humanoid, with some distinguishing features (such as wings, or multiple bodies etc.) and in mythology, famed for his cattle.

Geryon in the context of Black-figure pottery

Black-figure pottery painting (also known as black-figure style or black-figure ceramic; Ancient Greek: μελανόμορφα, romanizedmelanómorpha) is one of the styles of painting on antique Greek vases. It was especially common between the 7th and 5th centuries BC, although there are specimens dating in the 2nd century BC. Stylistically it can be distinguished from the preceding orientalizing period and the subsequent red-figure pottery style.

Figures and ornaments were painted on the body of the vessel using shapes and colors reminiscent of silhouettes. Delicate contours were incised into the paint before firing, and details could be reinforced and highlighted with opaque colors, usually white and red. The principal centers for this style were initially the commercial hub Corinth, and later Athens. Other important production sites are known to have been in Laconia, Boeotia, eastern Greece, and Italy. Particularly in Italy individual styles developed which were at least in part intended for the Etruscan market. Greek black-figure vases were very popular with the Etruscans, as is evident from frequent imports. Greek artists created customized goods for the Etruscan market which differed in form and decor from their normal products. The Etruscans also developed their own black-figure ceramic industry oriented on Greek models.

Geryon in the context of White ground technique

White-ground technique is a style of white ancient Greek pottery and the painting in which figures appear on a white background. It developed in the region of Attica, dated to about 500 BC. It was especially associated with vases made for ritual and funerary use, if only because the painted surface was more fragile than in the other main techniques of black-figure and red-figure vase painting. Nevertheless, a wide range of subjects are depicted.

In Greek mythology, the name Locrus or Lokros (/ˈlɒkrəs/; Ancient Greek: Λοκρός) may refer to:

  • Locrus, the king of Locris and son of his predecessor King Physcius. He was the grandson of Amphictyon, son of Deucalion. Locrus became by Cabya the father of Opus, the mythical ancestor of the Ozolian Locrians. According to some, his wife was called Cambyse or Protogeneia. Locrus named the Lelegians Locrians after himself.
  • Locrus, son of Zeus and Maera, the daughter of Proetus of Corinth. He is said to have assisted Zethus and Amphion in the building of Thebes. In some accounts, his mother was called Megaclite, daughter of Macareus and had a sister Thebe who married Zethus.
  • Locrus, son of Phaeax and brother of Alcinous who emigrated to Italy where he married Laurina, the daughter of Latinus. Herakles at about that time was driving Geryon's beautiful cows from Erytheia. He arrived and was hosted kindly by Lokros. Latinus came to visit his daughter, saw and fancied the cows and drove them away. Discovering this, Herakles shot with his bow and killed him, and brought back the cows. Lokros, fearing Herakles might suffer something terrible at the hands of Latinus, who was strong in body and spirit, had hastened to the aid of his guest, having put on military gear. Herakles seeing him running and thinking he was someone rushing to support Latinus, loosed a shaft and killed him. After he learned he mourned loudly and conducted the rites for him. And when he had passed from among men he appeared to the people as a ghost and ordered them to establish a city by the tomb of Lokros. And the city keeps the name in honor of Lokros.
  • Locrus, also a Parian statuary, of unknown date whose statue of Athena in the temple of Ares, at Athens, is mentioned by Pausanias.

Geryon in the context of Statuette of Geryon

The Statuette of Geryon is a 6th-century BC bronze Etruscan sculpture, showing the three-headed giant Geryon dressed as an ancient Greek hoplite. It was probably discovered in Chiusi in Italy, one of the towns of the Etruscan dodecapolis. It was one of the objects and artworks left to the musée des beaux-arts de Lyon by Jacques-Amédée Lambert in 1850.

Geryon in the context of Erytheia

Erytheia (Ancient Greek: Ἐρύθεια) ("the red one"), also latinized as Erythia, part of Greek mythology, is one of the three Hesperides. The name was applied to the island close to the coast of southern Hispania, that was the site of the original Punic colony of Gadeira. Pliny's Natural History (4.36) records of the island of Gades: "On the side which looks towards Spain, at about 100 paces distance, is another long island, three miles wide, on which the original city of Gades stood. By Ephorus and Philistides it is called Erythia, by Timæus and Silenus Aphrodisias, and by the natives the Isle of Juno." The island was the seat of Geryon, who was overcome by Heracles. Erytheia was also the place where, according to one account, the sun god Helios kept his sacred cattle when the Giant Alcyoneus stole them during the Gigantomachy.

Eurytion /jʊəˈrɪʃən/ (Ancient Greek: Εὐρυτίων, "widely honoured") or Eurythion /jʊəˈrɪθiən/ (Εὐρυθίων) was a name attributed to several individuals in Greek mythology:

  • Eurytion, the king of Phthia.
  • Eurytion, a Centaur of Arcadia who demanded to marry the daughter of Dexamenus of Olenus, either Mnesimache or Deianira, or who threatened violence against his daughter Hippolyte on the day of her marriage to Azan. Her father was forced to agree, but Heracles intervened on her behalf and killed the wild horse-man.
  • Eurytion, another Centaur, of Thessaly, who attempted to carry off the bride of Peirithous, king of the Lapiths, on their wedding day. He and his fellows were killed in the fight with the Lapiths that followed, the Centauromachy. Ovid refers to him as "Eurytus", and by his Latinized Greek name "Eurytion".
  • Eurytion, and the two-headed dog Orthrus, were the guardians of the cattle of Geryon and were killed by Heracles.
  • Eurytion, a Trojan archer during the Trojan War, son of Lycaon and brother of Pandarus. He participated in the funeral games of Anchises.
  • Eurytion, a defender of Thebes against the Seven, was killed by Parthenopaeus.
  • Eurytion, an alternate name for a Gigas who was slain by Artemis.
