Genesis Rabbah (Hebrew: בְּרֵאשִׁית רַבָּה, romanizedBərēšīṯ Rabbā, also known as Bereshit Rabbah and abbreviated as GenR) is a religious text from Judaism's classical period, probably written between 300 and 500 CE with some later additions. It is an expository midrash comprising a collection of ancient rabbinical homiletical interpretations of the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Torah. Jewish tradition attributes its authorship to Hoshaiah Rabbah in the period of the Amoraim, flourishing in 3rd century Roman-ruled Syria Palaestina, but modern scholarship on its authorship remains inconclusive. The midrash forms an aggadic commentary on Genesis, in keeping with the midrashic exegesis of that age. In a continuous sequence, broken only toward the end, the biblical text is expounded, verse for verse, often word for word. Only genealogic passages and passages that furnish no material for exposition (as the reiterated account of Abraham's servant in 24:35-48) are omitted.

Genesis Rabbah in the context of Eve

Eve is a figure from the Book of Genesis (ספר בראשית) in the Hebrew Bible. According to the origin story of the Abrahamic religions, she was the first woman to be created by God. Eve is known also as Adam's wife.

Her name means "living one" or "source of life". The name has been compared to that of the Hurrian goddess Ḫepat, who was worshipped in Jerusalem during the Late Bronze Age. It has been suggested that the Hebrew name Eve (חַוָּה) bears resemblance to an Aramaic word for "snake" (Old Aramaic language חוה; Aramaic חִוְיָא). The origin for this etymological hypothesis is the rabbinic pun present in Genesis Rabbah 20:11 ( c. 300-500 CE), utilizing the similarity between Heb. Ḥawwāh and Aram. ḥiwyāʾ. Notwithstanding its rabbinic ideological usage, scholars like Julius Wellhausen and Theodor Nöldeke argued for its etymological relevance.

Genesis Rabbah in the context of List of legends in the Quran

Several parables or pieces of narrative appear in the Quran, often with similar motifs to Jewish and Christian traditions which may predate those in the Quran.

Some included legends are the story of Cain and Abel (sura al-Ma'idah 27–31), of Abraham destroying idols (sura al-Anbiya 57), of Solomon's conversation with an ant (sura an-Naml), the story of the Seven Sleepers, and several stories about Mary, mother of Jesus.
