The Süper Lig (Turkish pronunciation: [ˈsypæɾ liɟ], Super League), also known as Trendyol Süper Lig for sponsorship reasons, is a professional association football league in Turkey and the highest level of the Turkish football league system. Eighteen teams compete, where a champion is decided and three clubs are promoted from, and another three relegated to the 1. Lig. The season runs from August to May, with each club playing 34 matches. Matches are played Friday through Monday.

Run by the Turkish Football Federation, the league succeeded the Turkish Football Championship and the National Division, both being former top-level national competitions. The Süper Lig is currently 9th in the UEFA coefficient ranking of leagues based on club performances in European competitions over the last five years. A total of 75 clubs have competed in the Süper Lig, but only 6 have won the title to date: Galatasaray (25), Fenerbahçe (19), Beşiktaş (16), Trabzonspor (7), Başakşehir (1) and Bursaspor (1).

Trabzonspor Kulübü is a Turkish professional sports club located in the city of Trabzon, located in northeastern Turkey. Established in 1967 through the merger of several local clubs, Trabzonspor is one of the most prominent football clubs in Turkish history. The men’s football team has won seven Süper Lig championships, making Trabzonspor the first non-Istanbul-based club to achieve this feat in the Turkish league system. In addition to their football achievements, Trabzonspor also operates a women’s football team, a men’s basketball team, and several other sports branches, reinforcing its status as a multi-sport club.

Trabzonspor rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, dominating Turkish football with six league titles between the 1975–76 and 1983–84 seasons. This golden era marked the club as a powerhouse, with Trabzonspor becoming a symbol of regional pride and the only club to challenge the dominance of Istanbul-based teams, such as Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, and Beşiktaş. During this period, they also won nine Turkish Cups, including a streak of three consecutive league titles in 1978–79, 1979–80, and 1980–81.

Bursaspor Kulübü Derneği, commonly known as Bursaspor, is a Turkish professional sports club based in the city of Bursa that plays in the TFF Second League, the third tier of the Turkish football league system. Founded in 1963, the club is best known for its football team, which has a rich history in Turkish football. Bursaspor’s traditional colors are green and white, and the team’s home kits typically feature these colors in a striped pattern. The club has played its home matches at the Bursa Centennial Atatürk Stadium since 2015.

Bursaspor experienced its greatest success during the 2009–10 Süper Lig season, when the club’s men’s football team sensationally won its first Turkish league title, finishing with 75 points, just one point ahead of perennial contenders Fenerbahçe. This victory made Bursaspor only the second team outside of Istanbul to win the Süper Lig, following Trabzonspor, who first achieved the feat in the 1975–76 season. Bursaspor’s triumph disrupted the long-standing dominance of the “Istanbul Big Three” (Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, and Beşiktaş) and remains one of the most memorable achievements in Turkish football history.
