Scholarly peer review or academic peer review (also known as refereeing) is the process of having a draft version of a researcher's methods and findings reviewed (usually anonymously) by experts (or "peers") in the same field. Peer review is widely used for helping the academic publisher (that is, the editor-in-chief, the editorial board or the program committee) decide whether the work should be accepted, considered acceptable with revisions, or rejected for official publication in an academic journal, a monograph or in the proceedings of an academic conference. If the identities of authors are not revealed to each other, the procedure is called dual-anonymous peer review.

Academic peer review requires a community of experts in a given (and often narrowly defined) academic field, who are qualified and able to perform reasonably impartial review. Impartial review, especially of work in less narrowly defined or inter-disciplinary fields, may be difficult to accomplish, and the significance (good or bad) of an idea may never be widely appreciated among its contemporaries. Peer review is generally considered necessary to academic quality and is used in most major scholarly journals. However, peer review does not prevent publication of invalid research, and as experimentally controlled studies of this process are difficult to arrange, direct evidence that peer review improves the quality of published papers is scarce. One recent analysis of randomized controlled trial abstracts found that editorial and peer review processes led to substantive improvements between submission and publication.

It was established by Johan Galtung in 1964 and emerged as a leading journal in the field of peace and conflict studies and International Relations under the editorship of Nils Petter Gleditsch (1976-1977, 1983-2010). The current editors-in-chief are Gudrun Østby and Sebastian Schutte (all are/were researchers at the Peace Research Institute Oslo).

The Journal asiatique (French pronunciation: [ʒuʁnal azjatik]; full earlier title Journal Asiatique ou Recueil de Mémoires, d'Extraits et de Notices relatifs à l'Histoire, à la Philosophie, aux Langues et à la Littérature des Peuples Orientaux) is a biannual peer-reviewed academic journal established in 1822 by the Société Asiatique covering Asian studies. It publishes articles in French and several other European languages. Cited texts are presented in their original languages. Each issue also includes news of the Société Asiatique and its members, obituaries of notable Orientalists, critical reviews, and books received. The journal is published by Peeters Publishers on behalf of the Société Asiatique and the editor-in-chief is Jean-Marie Durand.

The Journal of Indo-European Studies (JIES) is a peer-reviewed academic journal of Indo-European studies. The journal publishes papers in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, mythology and linguistics relating to the cultural history of the Indo-European-speaking peoples. It is published every three months. Since 2020, the journal's editor-in-chief is Emily Blanchard West, Associate Professor of Classics and History at St. Catherine University.

Content produced by Bloomberg News is disseminated through Bloomberg Terminals, Bloomberg Television, Bloomberg Radio, Bloomberg Businessweek, Bloomberg Markets, Bloomberg.com, and Bloomberg's mobile platforms. Since 2015, John Micklethwait has been editor-in-chief. Bloomberg Business News was also the name of a 15-minute TV series that aired from Jan 4th, 1994 to some time in 1997. It was created for public-access television but was also syndicated to normal TV stations like KRON-TV in the Bay Area.

Metaphilosophy is a peer-reviewed academic journal covering metaphilosophy. It is abstracted and indexed by PhilPapers and the Philosopher's Index.

Metaphilosophy was established in 1970 by Terry Bynum and Richard Reese. "Metaphilosophy" was given a working definition in the first issue of the journal as "the investigation of the nature of philosophy, with the central aim of arriving at a satisfactory explanation of the absence of uncontested philosophical claims and arguments." Speculum: A Journal of Medieval Studies is a quarterly academic journal published by University of Chicago Press on behalf of the Medieval Academy of America. It was established in 1926 by Edward Kennard Rand. The journal's primary focus is on the time period from 500 to 1500 in Western Europe, but also on related subjects such as Byzantine, Hebrew, Arabic, Armenian and Slavic studies. As of 2025, the editor is Barbara Newman.

The organization and its journal were first proposed in 1921 at a meeting of the Modern Language Association, and the journal's focus was interdisciplinary from its beginning, with one reviewer noting a specific interest in Medieval Latin.

A blue pencil, also known as a checking pencil, is a two-color pencil traditionally used by an editor to correct a written copy. The blue end is typically Prussian blue, and the red end is typically a warm vermilion red.They are most often half red and half blue, but some are 70% red and 30% blue. An editor-in-chief would use a blue colored pencil to make proofreading marks and final notes on manuscripts before sending it to be typeset and published. The pencils and their blue excisions became associated with the editing process and editorial oversight.

Since the introduction of desktop publishing, editing is typically done on computer files and without literal blue pencils. They continue to be used in the Japanese newspaper industry and elementary schools in parts of Europe. A different type of non-photo blue pencil is used by some comics artists for different purposes.
