A tunnel is an underground or undersea passageway. Cut and cover in the context of Immersed tube

An immersed tube (or immersed tunnel) is a kind of undersea tunnel composed of segments, constructed elsewhere and floated to the tunnel site to be sunk into place and then linked together. They are commonly used for road and rail crossings of rivers, estuaries and sea channels/harbours. Immersed tubes are often used in conjunction with other forms of tunnel at their end, such as a cut and cover or bored tunnel, which is usually necessary to continue the tunnel from near the water's edge to the entrance (portal) at the land surface.

Cut and cover in the context of Metropolitan line

The Metropolitan line, colloquially known as the Met, is a London Underground line between Aldgate in the City of London and Amersham and Chesham in Buckinghamshire, with branches to Watford in Hertfordshire and Uxbridge in Hillingdon. Printed in magenta on the tube map, the line is 41.4 miles (66.7 km) long and serves 34 stations. Between Aldgate and Finchley Road, the track lies mostly in shallow "cut and cover" tunnels, apart from short sections at Barbican and Farringdon stations. The rest of the line is above ground, with a loading gauge similar to those of main lines. Almost 94 million passenger journeys were made on the line in 2019.

This line is one of two Underground lines that cross the Greater London boundary and proceed outwards into the Home Counties, the other being the Central line. It is the only Underground line with an express service at peak times; the longer distance between stations means trains can achieve the system's highest speeds, up to 62 miles per hour (100 km/h), on some sections.

Cut and cover in the context of Red line (Stockholm Metro)

The Red line (Swedish: Röda linjen; officially Metro 2, but called Tub 2 ("Tube 2") internally), is one of the three Stockholm Metro lines. It has a total of 36 stations, of which four are cut and cover, 16 are tunneled, and 15 are on the surface. The line is a total of 41.238 kilometres (25.624 mi) long. It consists of four branches with terminals in Fruängen and Norsborg in the southwest and Mörby centrum and Ropsten in the northeast.

The "Red line" designation began in the late-1970s, and officially only since the 1990s, and comes from the fact that the route has been marked in red on Storstockholms Lokaltrafik's maps at least since the 1970s. Previously, the Red line had been coloured orange on the system map, but as new maps were printed with changes, the colour became increasingly redder in the 1980s.
