Much Buddhist art depicts the historical Buddha, Gautama Buddha, in forms known as Buddharūpa (lit.'Form of the Awakened One') in Sanskrit and Pali. These may be statues or other images such as paintings. The main figure in an image may also represent another individual who has attained Buddhahood, or a bodhisattva, especially within the various traditions of Mahayana Buddhism. Other Buddhas and bodhisattvas in art have become increasingly common over the centuries, perhaps now even outnumbering images of the historical Buddha.

In its first centuries Buddhism was largely or entirely aniconic, not showing the person of Buddha except by symbols and relics. This changed, and figures of the Buddha became very common in the art of Gandhara and Gupta art. As forms of esoteric Buddhism developed, other figures from the expanding array of Buddhist sacred persons became more prominent. In Theravada Buddhism this was much less the case, and figures of the historical Buddha remain the most common main images in temples and shrines to the present.

The Grand Buddha (simplified Chinese: 灵山大佛; traditional Chinese: 靈山大佛; pinyin: Língshān Dà Fó) is located on the north shore of Lake Tai, near Wuxi, Jiangsu within the Lingshan Scenic Area. It is one of the largest Buddha statues in China and also in the world.

The Grand Buddha at Ling Shan is a bronze Amitabha standing Buddha outdoor, weighing over 700 metric tons (690 long tons; 770 short tons). It was completed at the end of 1996. The monument is 88 meters (289 ft) in total height, including 9 m lotus pedestal.

Washi (和紙), also colloquially known as rice paper, is traditional Japanese paper processed by hand using fibers from the inner bark of the gampi tree, the mitsumata shrub (Edgeworthia chrysantha), or the paper mulberry (kōzo) bush.

Washi is generally tougher than Western paper made from wood pulp, and is used in many traditional arts. Origami, shodō, and ukiyo-e were all produced using washi. Washi was also used to make various everyday goods like clothes, household goods, and toys, as well as vestments and ritual objects for Shinto priests and statues of Buddhas. It was even used to make wreaths that were given to winners in the 1998 Winter Paralympics. Buddharupa in the context of Jade Buddha Temple

The Jade Buddha Temple (simplified Chinese: 玉佛禅寺; traditional Chinese: 玉佛禪寺; pinyin: Yùfó Chán Sì; Shanghainese: Niohveh Zoe Zy, literally Jade Buddha Chan Temple) is a Buddhist temple in Shanghai. It was founded in 1882 with two jade Buddha statues imported to Shanghai from Myanmar by sea. These were a sitting Buddha (1.95 meters tall, 3 tons), and a smaller reclining Buddha representing the Buddha's death. The temple now also contains a much larger reclining Buddha made of marble, donated from Singapore, and visitors may mistake this larger sculpture for the original, smaller piece.

The legend behind the transport of the Buddha statues from Myanmar led to the popular usage of Burmese-style Buddha statues in Chinese temples.

The Shwethalyaung Temple (Burmese: ရွှေသာလျှောင်းဘုရား [ʃwèθàljáʊɰ̃ pʰəjá]) is a Buddhist temple in the west side of Bago (Pegu), Myanmar. The name Shwethalyaung means "Golden Image of the Sleeping Buddha" and the temple houses a reclining Buddha statue in the temple is 55 metres (180 ft) in length and 15 metres (49 ft) in height.

According to tradition the temple was constructed during the reign of King Migadippa in 994. The temple went into disrepair twice before the 15th century and King Alaungpaya ransacked the city in 1757. It was rediscovered in 1881, and renovated.
