Yuzhno-Kurilsky District (Russian: Ю́жно-Кури́льский райо́н) is an administrative district (raion) of Sakhalin Oblast, Russia; one of the seventeen in the oblast. Municipally, it is incorporated as Yuzhno-Kurilsky Urban Okrug. It is located on the southern Kuril Islands southeast of the Island of Sakhalin, comprising the islands of Kunashir, Shikotan, and the Habomai. The area of the district is 1,856.1 square kilometers (716.6 sq mi). Its administrative center is the urban locality (an urban-type settlement) of Yuzhno-Kurilsk, located on Kunashir Island. Population: 9,501 (2010 census); 9,727 (2002 census); 13,597 (1989 Soviet census). The population of Yuzhno-Kurilsk accounts for 61.4% of the district's total population.

Kurilsky District (Russian: Кури́льский райо́н, romanizedKuríl'skiy rayón) is an administrative district (raion) of Sakhalin Oblast, Russia; one of the seventeen in the oblast. Municipally, it is incorporated as Kurilsky Urban Okrug. It is located on the central Kuril Islands southeast of the Island of Sakhalin. The area of the district is 5,145.9 square kilometers (1,986.8 sq mi). Its administrative center is the town of Kurilsk. Population: 7,359 (2010 census); 7,108 (2002 census); 10,498 (1989 Soviet census). The population of Kurilsk accounts for 28.1% of the district's total population. The name is sometimes spelled Kurliskiy or Kurliskiye in English.

Uilta (Orok: ульта, also called Ulta, Ujlta, or Orok) is a Tungusic language spoken in the Poronaysky and Nogliksky Administrative Divisions of Sakhalin Oblast, in the Russian Federation, by the Uilta people. The northern Uilta who live along the river of Tym’ and around the village of Val have reindeer herding as one of their traditional occupations. The southern Uilta live along the Poronay near the city of Poronaysk. The two dialects come from the northern and eastern groups, however, they have very few differences.
