2024 Summer Paralympics in the context of "1992 Winter Paralympics"

Politics and sports or sports diplomacy is the use of sport as a means to influence diplomatic, social, and political relations. Sports diplomacy may transcend cultural differences and bring people together. The use of sports and politics has had both positive and negative implications over history. Sports competitions or activities have had the intention to bring about change in certain cases. Nationalistic fervour is sometimes linked to victories or losses to some sport on sports fields.

While the Olympics is often the biggest political example of using sports for diplomatic means, cricket and association football, as well as other sports in the global arena, have also been used in this regard. In the case of Apartheid, sport was used to isolate South Africa and bring about a major overhaul in the country's social structure. While ethnicity, race, social class and more can cause division, sports is also said to help blend differences. Additionally, numerous athletes have sought political office such as Imran Khan and George Weah, some of them unsuccessfully, on either the national level or the sub-national current. Some matches have also had national diplomatic incidents.

Paris 2024 is the successful bid to bring the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad and the XVII Paralympic Games, to the French capital city. Paris formally announced its intention to bid on 23 June 2015 – the date on which Olympic Day is globally celebrated. Following withdrawals in the 2024 Summer Olympics bidding process that led to just two candidate cities (Los Angeles and Paris), the IOC announced that the 2028 Summer Olympics would be awarded at the same time as the 2024 Games. After Los Angeles agreed on 31 July 2017 to host the 2028 Games, Paris was the only candidate city left in the bidding process for the 2024 Games. It was officially announced at the IOC Session in Lima, Peru.

Paris previously hosted the 1900 Summer Olympics and the 1924 Summer Olympics. Paris will be the second city (after London) to host the Olympic Games three times. Of note, 2024 marked the 100th anniversary of 1924 Summer Olympics, as well as the first Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix. On July 31, 2017, it was announced that rival bidder Los Angeles would host in 2028, effectively giving Paris the 2024 games.

The Tuileries Garden (French: Jardin des Tuileries, IPA: [ʒaʁdɛ̃ de tɥilʁi]) is a public garden between the Louvre and the Place de la Concorde in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, France. Created by Catherine de' Medici as the garden of the Tuileries Palace in 1564, it was opened to the public in 1667 and became a public park after the French Revolution. Since the 19th century, it has been a place for Parisians to celebrate, meet, stroll and relax. During the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, it was the site of the Olympic and Paralympic cauldron.

The House of Switzerland is the official guesthouse of the Swiss Confederation, which is built, furnished and operated for the duration of the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games. It is the official meeting point of the Swiss Olympic Team and the venue for the official medal celebrations of the Swiss medalists.

The House of Switzerland is one of the few Houses of Nations at the Olympic Games that is open to the public.

The 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics cauldron (French: Chaudron des Jeux olympiques et paralympiques d'été de 2024) was made for the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Paris. It is located at the Tuileries Garden.

The Paris Organising Committee for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games (COJOP2024) (French: Comité d'Organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de Paris 2024) is the organising committee for the 2024 Summer Olympics and the 2024 Summer Paralympics which were held in Paris, France. Tony Estanguet serves as president of the committee. Étienne Thobois serves as director general. The committee was established on 18 January 2018.

The committee has an agreement with the TOCOG2020 of the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics to share knowledge and expertise. The committee also has an agreement with the organising committee of the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics to share knowledge and resources as well as joint communication and advocacy.

Aéroport d'Orly station (French pronunciation: [aeʁɔpɔʁ dɔʁli]) is a Paris Métro station serving as the southern terminus station of Line 14, built as part of the Grand Paris Express project. It is located on the land of the commune Paray-Vieille-Poste and serves Orly Airport, about 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) south of Paris. The station opened with the extension of Line 14 to the south on 24 June 2024, shortly before the start of the 2024 Summer Olympics and 2024 Summer Paralympics.
