A municipality is usually a single administrative division having corporate status and powers of self-government or jurisdiction as granted by national and regional laws to which it is subordinate.
The term municipality may also mean the governing body of a given municipality. A municipality is a general-purpose administrative subdivision, as opposed to a special-purpose district.

The Central African Republic is divided into 20 prefectures (18 administrative prefectures and 2 economic prefectures ) one prefecture was formerly an autonomous commune but was changed in December 2020. The prefectures (préfectures) are further divided into 84 sub-prefectures (sous-préfectures).
Luxembourg's 100 communes (Luxembourgish: Gemengen [ɡəˈmæŋən]; French: communes; German: Gemeinden) conform to LAU Level 2 and are the country's lowest administrative divisions.
Communes rank below cantons in Luxembourg's hierarchy of administrative subdivisions. Communes are often re-arranged, being merged or divided as demanded by demographic change over time. Unlike the cantons, which have remained unchanged since their creation, the identity of the communes has not become ingrained within the geographical sensations of the average Luxembourger. The cantons are responsible for the ceremonial, administrative, and statistical aspects of government, while the communes provide local government services.
Gonâve Island or Zile Lagonav (French: Île de la Gonâve, pronounced [ɡɔ.nɑv]; also La Gonâve) is an island of Haiti located west-northwest of Port-au-Prince in the Gulf of Gonâve. It is the largest of the Hispaniolan satellite islands. The island is an arrondissement (Arrondissement de La Gonâve) or Ouest-Insulaire in the Ouest and includes the communes of Anse-à-Galets and Pointe-à-Raquette.
Rudersdal Municipality (Danish: Rudersdal Kommune) is a part suburban, part rural municipality (Danish, kommune) located on the northern outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark. It covers an area of 73 km² and has a population of 57,342 (1. January 2025). The distance from Copenhagen City Hall Square is approximately 20 km. The western part of the municipality is served by the Hillerød radial of the S-train network while the eastern part is served by the Coast Line. Administratively Rudersdal Municipality belongs to Region Hovedstaden.
On 1 January 2007 Rudersdal municipality was created as the result of 2007 Danish Municipal Reform, consisting of the former municipalities of Søllerød and Birkerød.
Marstal municipality, is a former municipality (Danish, kommune) in Funen County on the island of Ærø in southern Denmark. Since 1 January 2006 it has been part of Ærø municipality. Its territory included the islands of Birkholm and Halmø, and covered an area of 17 km. In 2005, it had a total population of 3,208. Its last mayor was Karsten Landro, a member of the Conservative People's Party (Det Konservative Folkeparti) political party.
Its main town and site of its municipal council was the town of Marstal.
Greve Municipality (Danish: Greve Kommune is a kommune about 21 km south-west of Copenhagen in Region Sjælland on the east coast of the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in eastern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 60 km, and has a total population of 53,536 (2025).
The site of its municipal council is the town of Greve Strand.
Roskilde County (Danish: Roskilde Amt) is a former county (Danish: amt) on the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in eastern Denmark. The county was abolished effective January 1, 2007, when it merged into Region Sjælland (i.e. Region Zealand).
Roskilde is also the name of the county's capital, and the name of a municipality (Danish: kommune). The small city of Roskilde is located 30 km west of Copenhagen. Danish kings were traditionally crowned there, in the Roskilde Cathedral. Roskilde is also home to the Viking Ship Museum, an "alternative" university, and the popular Roskilde Festival, annual music festival.
